FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Buffalo, NY— Carima El-Behairy, the endorsed progressive Democrat running for New York State Senate District 60, on Monday joined Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul as she visited Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York’s Main Street office in Buffalo. Hochul demanded that the State Senate take action on the Reproductive Health Act (S2796/A1748) and pass legislation that will protect a woman’s right to choose.
“I am with the Lt. Governor at the offices of Planned Parenthood to stand up for the Reproductive Health Act,” El-Behairy said. “Women are under attack, and we must fight to preserve our hard-won right to make choices regarding our own reproductive health.”
“On the national stage, we continue to see the erosion of a woman’s right to choose, but few people realize that Republicans in the State Senate are also active participants in anti-choice strategies,” El-Behairy said. “The Reproductive Health Act has passed the New York State Assembly many times, yet the GOP-controlled Senate refuses to bring it to a vote. We’re calling on the New York State Senate to return to Albany and bring this legislation to a vote without delay.”
According to the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), the Reproductive Health Act is supported by seventy percent of New Yorkers across political and religious lines. El-Behairy said that a new conservative member of the Supreme Court would embolden those who want to overturn or chip away at Roe v. Wade, jeopardizing the right of women to obtain safe and legal abortions.
“Passing the Reproductive Health Act would ensure that a woman in New York is able to choose the best course of action regarding her personal healthcare decisions, including electing to have a child or end a pregnancy,” El-Behairy said. “This legislation would update New York’s existing pre-Roe laws by amending the penal law, the criminal procedure law, and county law and judiciary law and put abortion—a medical procedure—into the health code where it belongs.”
“I will work to make sure our laws protect New Yorkers from both federal actions and state GOP inaction,” El-Behairy said. “This is why I’m running—to stand for women’s rights, to fight back, to move forward.”
A longtime champion of women’s reproductive rights, El-Behairy is a board member of her local Planned Parenthood affiliate and a supporter of access to quality healthcare—particularly women’s healthcare. The Buffalo affiliate of Planned Parenthood services approximately 46,000 clients per year.
Carima El-Behairy is a small business owner with a record of service to Western New York’s health, education, and arts organizations. She is running on a platform of healthcare access and affordability, quality education, particularly universal pre-K, election reform, and preservation with sensible development.
El-Behairy is the endorsed candidate of the Democratic, Women’s Equality, and Working Families parties for New York State Senate, District 60.
